SPACE DIMENSION CONTROLLER release excellent new video and album on Ninja Tune!

Ninja Tune was once one of my favorite labels. Could ‘Orange Melamine’ be the sign that its newest output deserves my turntable time that its back catalogue always had?

In the early/mid 90’s I would buy whatever Ninja Tune vinyl almost blindfolded, records by Amon Tobin, The Herbaliser, Mr Scruff, Blockhead, being amongst the most cherished pieces of my record collection.

Over the last decade, I tried to follow their new releases but none really rung a bell except the occasional Bonobo cut.

Enter today. The video-clip of Space Dimension Controller for  “The Bad People” has instantly drawn my attention with its retro/futuristic neon aesthetics, slightly reminiscent of those of “Far Cry: Blood Dragon”

Listening to the new album, I felt in familiar territory as well: glitchy beats, hiss and reverb, ambient soundscapes in the veins of Boards Of Canada and Aphex Twin, trippy samples…

Jacob Chabeaux‘s artwork, press shots and video compliment perfectly this helluva journey.

Being curious about the background of the release I checked out this article and learned that SDC is a project born back in early 2008 when Jack Hamill (R&S, Clone, Royal Oak), then aged 18, has recorded his first album in his bedroom in Belfast.

His influences were old VHS tapes handed down from his older brother and cousins, as well as artists like Boards of Canada, Brian Eno and William Basinski.

The album’s audio and visual references include sci-fi films and animations from the 80’s and 90’s ; from The X-Files, The Guyver, Short Circuit, The Gobots, and Ghostbusters through to The Fifth Element, Escape from New York and Power Rangers.

I will definitely grab ‘Orange Melamine’  once it’s released on LP/CD the 22nd of July. Until then, you can grab the digital version if that’s your thing.

About panos.agoros

Music and computers. The same two passions that Panos has ever since he was a kid, have defined the path that he would follow in life. He studied computer science in Paris-France in the early/mid 90's and is an IT engineer, providing since 1999 Mission Critiical support for enterprise environments. He is also known to be a retro hardware scavenger and old computer collector. His love for music pushed him to become actively involved in the scene. From November 1995 until the early 00's he ran Chaotik Webzine, a pioneering music webzine and the first to provide coverage for both the metal & hardcore underground. He is for the last 15 years an editor of Metal Hammer Greece, the biggest music magazine in the country. He rans a small record label and distro, Blastbeat Mailmurder, and is also the vocalist/lyricist of critically and fan acclaimed astrogrind outfit Dephosphorus. In his lost hours he does field recordings and manipulates sound waves for his experimental noise/ambient Kommpound.
