A roast-ish delight : Cosmic Ristretto baltic porter craft beer review

Pours into a teku. Dark, nearly opaque, colour with a tan, foamy head, which disperses quite rapidly, retaining a thin but lasting -‘till the end- ring.

Cosmic RIstretto

Cosmic RIstretto – Baltic Porter with Espresso by Green Flash Brewing Co.

Extravagantly pungent roast aroma, sharp and bold, that consists of fresh-roasted coffee, espresso, mocha, couverture chocolate and ash. As the beer warms up, some botanical and earthy notes are making their way out, a kind offer from the hops, accompanied by hazelnut paste tones. No alcohol (8.2%) detected here. The nose is evoking our senses, and it is a promissory note for what is going to follow up in the flavour department.

Bittersweet “dark” taste, leaning mainly towards the bitter side. Again here, we can effortlessly discern assertive roastiness, dark chocolate, espresso, cocoa, and an overall burnt sensation. Well-hidden black bread nuances appear in the aftertaste, escorted by some oaty hints. Alcohol is totally masked, even when our barley liquid has warmed up for good, rendering it perilously drinkable. Mildly bitter and dry finish, light to medium body, although we would expect a fuller one, but with a very smooth texture. Moderate carbonation. The flavour is much less impressive than the aroma, albeit it tries to keep up.

The verdict… This particular ale -though, typically this is a lager, since it is bottom-fermented-, resembles mostly a Coffee stout, which is anticipated for the reason that it is Espresso infused, and not that much a Baltic porter, a category of beer that tends to be almost completely sweet and chocolaty. As it is more than clear, the roasty and coffee character is definite and into extremes… Off the charts… Consequently, it fails to a great extent at being a Baltic porter, but it is a delicious and fine example of a brew with no flaws.

Coffee-addicts, do not pass up the opportunity to try this “dark” juice…
