Reverorum Ib Malacht “Ter Agios Numini” album review and soundcloud excerpt

I must give credit for discovering REVERORUM IB MALACHT to longtime comrade John Gossard (Dispirit, ex-Asunder, ex-Weakling)!

Strangely enough, following his words of praise back in the early 10’s I haven’t instantly listened to any of their records. This is probably due to the fact that when I visited their Myspace, they had a link to a crazy Christian website with the title “Hardcore of the hardcore” (or something similar). See, their members were part of the Swedish black metal scene in the early/mid 00’s before converting back to Christianity!

Anyway, the page in question was totally ridiculous, praising some Orthodox monks living in hermitages on the West Coast of the USA for being ultra-hardcore and miracle makers. At that point, I thought that the band members were probably burned out as hell and that put me off.

A few years later, in 2014,“De Mysteriis Dom Christi” was released and resistance was over. I figured that a band coming up with such a fantastic  album title, sort of inverting Mayhem’s “De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas” (one of my all-time fave records), should have some serious balls to back it up.

Half-seriously labelling themselves as “Romeo Catholic black metal”, what they did is create some of the most challenging underground sounds I’ve heard in this decade. An ambient masterpiece built around ritualistic vocals, energetic analog drumming, and some thick, oppressive atmospheric soundscapes (the strings were a mere detail, hardly noticeable in the mix).

Furthermore and as if the amazing, ground breaking music wasn’t enough, this was practically a triple album, as the LP, CD and cassette versions all had completely different music! Needless, to say that I’ve acquired all three physical formats …

“Ter Agios Numini” is Reverorum Ib Malacht’s 3rd full-length album and has the tough mission of being the successor of a masterpiece.

“Ter Agios Numini” is wilder and more experimental. In fact, the first thing you’ll probably think when you’ll listen to it –especially if you don’t know it’s been created by two devout Christians- is: “what drugs are these guys into?”.

The proper way to put it is that it sounds “alien” – in the best possible sense of the word. The vocals play a decisive role in that, as they often become terrifying and totally freaked out. In other parts, the music seems to glitch and if you listen on CD, you’ll reach out for your player checking if it works correctly.

The impression I often get is that I’m listening to some crazy, experimental home recordings BUT with the class and production of a studio album. The ambient and atmospheric layers are on the droney side and highly contribute to the cryptic and almost psychedelic nature of the Malachtian music style.

“Ter Agios Numini” and its creators are one of the rare instances in today’s underground that truly offer an otherworldly sonic trip. This is a deep dive into a bewildering  microcosm of musical, aesthetical and ideological experimentation where no boundaries and safety harnesses exist.

For the record collectors, the vinyl edition is gorgeous and highly collectable (see photos below).

He is also known to be a retro hardware scavenger and old computer collector. His love for music pushed him to become actively involved in the scene. From November 1995 until the early 00's he ran Chaotik Webzine, a pioneering music webzine and the first to provide coverage for both the metal & hardcore underground. He is for the last 15 years an editor of Metal Hammer Greece, the biggest music magazine in the country. He rans a small record label and distro, Blastbeat Mailmurder, and is also the vocalist/lyricist of critically and fan acclaimed astrogrind outfit Dephosphorus.
