GOATVERMIN “Detruire” black/death metal album review and bandcamp stream

The first quarter of 2017 sees the spectacular return of French black/death metal, thanks to the debut albums of three excellent bands: Ritualization, Necroblood and Goatvermin. The timing couldn’t be better as there exist strong rumors that Arkhon Infaustus, the local forefathers of that particular sound, are preparing their come-back with a new line-up after 7 years of hiatus.

Back to the album reviewed here, even though their band name and aesthetics may lead to confusion, Goatvermin from Franche-Comté are not your typical “goat metal” band. They’re way too good for that!

The trio deliver with precision a supersonic, chaotic wall of sound. Their music style brings in mind some very flattering comparisons: Arkhon Infaustus circa “Dead Cunt Maniac” and “Hell Injection”, Conqueror, Revenge, Black Witchery, Angelcorpse

However, what’s most important than Goatvermin’s musicianship and exciting style, is the songwriting involved. In all its savagery, the music is memorable and catchy. Songs like “Mort Aux Traîtres” (ed – Mort Aux Lâches!) have the quality of underground hits. The dual vokills contribute a lot in that sense, as the vocal lines are very intense and addictive.

The band has also a flair for dynamics, thus balancing the ultra-violence. See for example the ambient part ending 2nd track, “Pogrom Of Hate”. Built around feedback and samples, it helps the listener catch his/her breath after the very brutal beginning of the album. It also leads perfectly the way into the title track and its majestic riffing. The fact that the album ends with epic mid-tempo crusher “Atrocious Rituals” and its share of Immolation/Incantation worship, is another fine example of clever thinking and sense of flow.

The production is flawless and it is stated that the recording has been done live. I reckon that some may be bothered by what sounds like triggered drums but honestly it’s not something shocking nor a dealbreaker.

Attitude-wise, you gotta love the “No Contact – Fuck You” printed on the inlay! Checking the band live as caught on video (see below) shows a sober and focused outfit, low profile on looks but very tight execution-wise. The fact that the drummer is also handling growls is quite impressive.

This will without doubt stay in the archives as one of 2017’s most radical and raw releases.

I got in my hands both the CD and LP edition. The latter is a must have! Chris Moyen’s artwork and the overall layout look very cool printed in black and red. They are complimented by red vinyl spinning at 45RPM.

This will without doubt stay in the archives as one of 2017’s most radical and raw releases. We urge you to support Goatvermin and their excellent record label, Armée De La Mort (run by Shaxul, drummer/vocalist of Manzer and ex-Deathspell Omega)!
