GOATVERMIN “Detruire” black/death metal album review and bandcamp stream

The first quarter of 2017 sees the spectacular return of French black/death metal, thanks to the debut albums of three excellent bands: Ritualization, Necroblood and Goatvermin. The timing couldn’t be better as there exist strong rumors that Arkhon Infaustus, the local forefathers of that particular sound, are preparing their come-back with a new line-up after 7 years of hiatus.

Back to the album reviewed here, even though their band name and aesthetics may lead to confusion, Goatvermin from Franche-Comté are not your typical “goat metal” band. They’re way too good for that!

Re-releases of “best kept secret” type of old bands, usually package attractively mediocre quality content using 80’s/90’s nostalgia and vinyl fetishism.

Even when the music is good, most such bands were mere clones back at the day, therefore their (re-) discovery offers modest thrills.

INFESTER is the exception to the rule. If, like me, you’ve never heard them then you’re in for a big surprise!

NECROBLOOD “Collapse of the Human Race” black/death metal album review and bandcamp stream

Parisian old-school metal band NECROBLOOD have penetrated violently my musical microcosm back in 2011.

They have done so with the best credentials that an underground metal band could possibly have according to my book: a debut self-titled 7”EP released by Spikekult, the ground breaking undead record label of Antaeus/Aosoth frontman MkM – responsible for such seminal releases as DEMONCY’s “Joined In Darkness” original vinyl edition and ARKHON INFAUSTUS “Dead Cunt Maniac” 7”EP.

DEAD CONGREGATION Rehearsal 2005 review and bandcamp stream

I hate the feeling but sometimes you gotta be grateful to the bootleggers and other greedy bastards. It’s thanks to them that occasionally bands are forced to release to the public recordings that otherwise would have remain hidden, reserved to private use.

NUCLEAR WINTER “Abomination Virginborn” CD review

I don’t recall exactly how many times I’ve written about this demo… Not enough! For those who’ve been on a coma for the last 13 years, “Abomination Virginborn”  is the most important Greek demo of the 00’s. It also is the recording who put Greek death metal in the map of the international underground, paving the way for the DEAD CONGREGATION phenomenon.

Rippikoulu are back after 21 years with new album titled “Ulvaja”

Posted on by Vassago in Death Metal, Doom Metal, Music | Leave a comment

Rippikoulu Ulvaja CoverWell well if this isn’t the biggest surprise to date. The long anticipated third release from finish Death/Doom metal band Rippikoulu is set to be released in two weeks time!

Those not aware with the band probably didn’t realise that I am sarcastic since “Ulvaja” is indeed the band’s third release in….well 21 years, and to be fair noone saw it coming (how could you afterall).

Rippikoulu became known through a demo tape released back in 1993 “Musta Seremonia” resulting in the creation of some sort of cult/fanatic death/doom metal fan base, then noone ever heard a thing for roughly 20 years.

Kuolemanlaakso : ‘Tulijoutsen’ Album Review

Posted on by Vassago in black metal, Death Metal, Doom Metal, Music | Leave a comment

The highly acclaimed Finnish death doomsters return with their brand new album (second full length release following their debut “Uljas uusi maailma” in 2012)  titled “Tulijoutsen“. Produced once again by the TriptykonTulijoutsen-album-cover and Dark Fortress guitarist V. Santura, Kuolemanlaakso’s new album “Tulijoutsen” aim is to push the band into a new territory by combining different music genres such as death, doom and gothic/atmospheric metal with a melancholic touch which is present throughout (almost) the whole album. Their debut album, ‘Uljas Uusi Maailma’ was a good introduction to the scene but with ‘Tulijoutsen’ the aim is clearly to push themselves to a different level and reach audiences – which I will dare to say – who like bands such as from the Symphonic death metalers Tristania to the Gothic metal legends Moonspell.

The horror: PORTAL -CURTAIN-

Posted on by panos.agoros in Art, Death Metal, Music | Leave a comment

Hailing from Australia, PORTAL are on the edge of the contemporary extreme music scene. Their unorthodox, chaotic death metal will swallow and deconstruct you. From the lyrics written in their own cryptic language, to the terrifying, paradoxal artwork, the music is endorsed and supported by some of the darkest and most inspiring aesthetics.

The video-clip for “Curtain”, out of their 2013’s offering for Profound Lore Records “Vexovoid”, presents the realm of their art under a concrete, horrific angle.
